The Benefits of Community Building

Community building isn’t always easy, but it is a powerful way to create a healthier, interactive environment. With an epidemic of loneliness hurting the happiness of many individuals, there’s never been a more critical time to invest in communities.

All it takes to create or join a community is some initiative and courage. Continue reading to learn more about why community building should be a priority!

Create a Sense of Belonging

Did you know that around 80% of young adults have indicated that they feel lonely? It might also be surprising to learn that far more young adults feel lonely than older adults. Some individuals may attribute these troubling statistics to the pandemic, which caused many to retreat into isolation for health and safety reasons. Whatever the cause may be, finding a sense of community can be one of the best ways to combat loneliness.

Communities can create a positive sense of belonging for those involved. Further, communities can introduce members to others who share the same passion for a particular cause or topic. For individuals new to a school or geographic area, communities such as volunteer groups, jogging clubs, or religious organizations can be excellent ways to foster connections and encourage more engagement with the outside world.

Learn from Those Around You

When you engage in communities, you broaden your knowledge base. The simple act of interacting with a more diverse range of people can generate more perspectives and opinions to consider. As a result, communities help to promote a better sense of understanding and empathy, as well as clearer communication skills. The learning won’t just happen on your end, either. As a community member, you are in a position to lead, inspire, and encourage. You can lend your insights to help those around you, as well.

OhanaHC offers volunteers and students opportunities to develop intentional communities. When young people and adult mentors are paired, they begin a journey of continuous learning. While connecting through supportive exchanges, attending events together, and maintaining a connection over many years, participants forge larger communities along the way.

Build a Stronger Network Through Community Building

Finally, when you work to build a community, you build a stronger network of people in your life. Consider what steps you can take to build communities. Joining existing communities, such as volunteer groups or clubs centered on an activity, can be highly beneficial. But it also is possible to build meaningful communities among neighbors and acquaintances you hope to know better. Host a block party or barbecue. Take the initiative to invite a select group over for a meet and greet. When you immerse yourself in more than one community, you enrich your life even more.

At OhanaHC, we pursue community building as a central component of our mission. Young adults, mentors, and other volunteers work together to create supportive environments and paths to success. Fill out the contact form on our website or email us at to find out how you can participate!
