Steven Porter

Steven Porter, Bio Picture, HCPSS, OhanaHC, Ohana, Volunteer, Columbia, Maryland, Howard county, pub

Now retired from the for-profit world, Steven held the CPA designation (1976), the CFP designation (2002) and many securities licenses. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1975 with a major in accounting. He also has an MBA (1980) from the Smith School of Business at University of Maryland.


Steven has experience in public accounting, real estate management, health care and telecommunications consulting. In 1987, he became an equity owner in H. Beck, Inc., a securities broker-dealer and registered investment adviser. With four other shareholders, H. Beck grew into a national entity that was sold to a mutually owned insurance company in 2008. At H. Beck, Steven’s positions included CFO, head of due diligence, head of recruiting and president.


In 2010, Steven became a minority partner in Patuxent Financial Partners, a firm controlled by his son, Matthew D. Porter, JD, CFP. In 2017, Patuxent Financial Partners became a fee-only, registered investment advisor. Steven retired and sold his interest back to Matt.


Steven is a 2011 Premier graduate of Leadership Howard County (LHC). At LHC, Steven co-chaired the Community Impact Projects committee for many years and co-chaired the steering committee for the Premier program for two years. Steven has also served on the board of the Bright Minds Foundation. He is now on the board and executive committee of the Community Foundation of Howard County. 


Steven and Susan Porter are co-founders of Ohana of Howard County, Inc. OhanaHC is modeled on the work of Thread in Baltimore to help academically struggling, underserved high school children in Howard County.
