Sometimes mentoring looks like a deep conversation. Sometimes it looks like four young people piling into a car for an Orioles game.
One OhanaHC mentor had planned to stay home when a student she had gotten to know through the larger OhanaHC community reached out and asked if he was going to the game, and if he could give them a ride.
He said yes.
That one “yes” turned into an afternoon full of them, with surprises around every corner. Who could have planned: a grand slam, a foul ball, the jumbotron, free cotton candy, and a few unexpected VIP moments along the way.
At one point, riding through the crowd after the game, one of the kids yelled, “We’re famous!”
It was funny, spontaneous, and completely ordinary in the best way.
Because some of the most meaningful moments in mentoring happen when young people simply get to experience something new, laugh together, feel included, and know there are adults willing to say yes.
What started as a ride to a baseball game became a day they’ll remember.
And it all started because someone showed up.

For Dwight and Clarissa Evans, giving back is something they do together.
Before she was helping create opportunities for young people in Howard County as a volunteer with OhanaHC, Taylor Ellerbe was one of the young people shaped by them.
Somebody told a ninth grader about OhanaHC. If you know a young person in Howard County who could use more adults in their corner, connect us.
