StoryMentoring

Xavier brings curiosity, creativity, and an easy ability to connect with young people to his role as an OhanaHC mentor.
A student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Xavier is pursuing degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science. Outside the classroom, he sings, is involved in the arts, enjoys learning about plants, and, much to the delight of his student, can always talk video games.
But for Xavier, mentoring is also about something bigger: helping create the kind of community where people know they have others around them to count on.
OhanaHC has shown me the importance of connecting with those in your community. The world can be scary, but when your community is strong, we can overcome anything.
By sharing his time, interests, and perspective, Xavier is helping build that sense of connection for another young person.
We’re grateful to have him as part of the OhanaHC village and for the energy and enthusiasm he brings to mentoring.

Learn how mentoring can expand access to information, networks, guidance and opportunities for young people, while creating a stronger sense of belonging.
For Chris Matthews, mentoring feels like a natural extension of the work he has spent more than two decades doing with students and families across Howard County Public Schools.
Somebody told a ninth grader about OhanaHC. If you know a young person in Howard County who could use more adults in their corner, connect us.
