Why should someone choose OhanaHC? We asked our youth to make the case in an OhanaHC Shark Tank Competition during our summer program.
What better way to find out what young people value about OhanaHC than to ask them to make the case themselves in a friendly school competition?
It was part of a summer youth program, held at the Community Ecology Institute, where students got their hands dirty working on the farm while building communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
At the end of the week, they had a chance to put those skills to the test.
The experience culminated in a Shark Tank-style competition with a challenge: Convince someone to join OhanaHC.
Working in teams, youth developed their pitches, decided what they wanted people to know about OhanaHC, and presented their case to the “sharks.”
Their pitches were creative, thoughtful, and, at times, convincing. But they also gave us something even more valuable: the chance to hear OhanaHC described through the eyes of the young people who experience it.
They talked about the relationships they’ve built, the experiences they’ve had, the people they can turn to, and what being part of OhanaHC means to them.

Every young person finds something here that matters. Listen to one student talk about his experience.
When Michael joined OhanaHC as a junior at Hammond High School, he wasn’t sure yet what life after high school would look like. Over time, that space became more.
Somebody told a ninth grader about OhanaHC. If you know a young person in Howard County who could use more adults in their corner, connect us.
